How Much Should I Bet In No Limit Texas Hold’em?

In fixed limit hold’em, players are free to focus on whether to play a hand and how many bets they can get into the pot when they have the best of it. No limit players have much more to worry about, namely, the size of their bets. Since no limit players are welcome to bet any amount they want, deciding how much to bet will be vital part of their online poker strategy
Sample Betting Situation in No Limit Texas Hold’em
Pre-Flop
You hold As Qs in middle position of a $5/$10 no limit online hold em game. You have $1,000 in your stack. Clearly you want to raise here, but by how much?
A minimum raise of $10 lets opponents in too cheaply, and gives every caller after the first great odds to try to hit their hand. A raise of $100 creates a bad risk/reward situation. You will probably only get called by a hand that has you dominated. Something somewhere in the middle, like a raise to $40 will do the trick.
Flop
You make it $40 to go and get one caller in late position. The flop comes Qd 8d 5h. Perfect. You could check here to slow play but there are two diamonds on the board and one pair is a vulnerable hand, even if it is top pair top kicker.
Ideally, you would like to give your opponent tempting but incorrect odds to call on a flush draw. His odds of hitting a flush on the next card if he is on a draw are about 4-to-1 against. If you bet half the pot, around $50, he is offered 3-to-1, but the $145 pot may be too tempting to resist.
Turn and River
If he calls the $145 and a diamond comes on the turn, you will be in a tough spot. Some players will bet out to represent that they are not afraid of the flush. Others will check and hope for the best.
If no diamond comes, another $100 bet will give you a positive expectation against a flush draw. However, some players may decide this pot is big enough and make a larger bet to force the flush draw to fold.
In general, when you have the best hand, it’s important to bet enough to give bad odds to draws. If you’re not sure that you have the best hand, probing bets to find out is often a good idea. Remember, that if you bet too small, you may appear weak, tempting aggressive players to try to force you out.
